A new study has shown that weight loss surgery might be beneficial for people who are dealing with obesity. Experts have done a study on 4000 participants in the Swedish Obese Subjects program. They have continued with this study for more than 20 years. The research has found some life-changing findings. It says that obese people who have undergone bariatric surgery have lived 3 years longer on average than those who have not gone through the surgery. The study proves that having weight loss surgery can improve the lifespan of obese people. The findings of the study say that the body mass index (BMI) of people who have gone through the weight loss surgery has reduced by 11 points after the surgery. This report has been published in the US News and World Report.

Experts have said that though weight loss surgery increases the life expectancy of obese people, however, their lifespan is still six years lesser than people with average weight. Dr. John Mortan, the director of bariatric surgery at Yale School of Medicine has said that with more effective weight loss surgeries, the outcome can be more impressive. He has reviewed this study as well. He has claimed that undergoing weight loss surgery early in life is more beneficial. The study shows that the longer the body bears extra weight, the more prone it becomes to chronic ailments. Dr. Mortan has said that extra weight shoots up the risk of comorbidities as well.

Experts have said that considering the positive effect bariatric surgery can bring, it is quite underutilized. They have said that such types of surgeries can be a feasible option for people who require losing weight. Some of the experts have said that health authorities need to rethink the management of morbidly obese people. The chief of obesity surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Mitchell Roslin has advised healthcare providers to prescribe this surgery to their patients who are dealing with obesity more often before any irreversible changes take place.
