Pneumatic cylinder or air cylinder is a device designed for converting pressure energy into useful motion.  It uses packed air inside the barrel of the cylinder to move the load along a lined way. In these type of cylinders, pneumatic pressure forces piston to travel in the chosen path same as hydraulic cylinders. Piston rod in the cylinder transfers the force that is developed to move the object. Industries prefer pneumatics because they are cleaner, calmer, and do not require large space for fluid storage.

The pneumatic cylinder is similar to automobile piston, which uses the pressure created by inflow of pressurized gas whereas automotive piston uses the force created by a gasoline explosion. In the pneumatic cylinder, the piston returns to its original position after completing each stroke.

Single acting cylinders use the force of air pressure to move the rod in a single direction. In these type of cylinders, when the air pressure is released the spring returns the piston to its original position. In double acting cylinders, the air pressure is used in both retraction and extension strokes. Double acting cylinders have two ports to control each stroke.
