Cellulase (CAS 9012-54-8) refers to a class of enzymes that are produced by bacteria, fungi, and protozoans for hydrolysis of cellulose. The cellulose decomposition process is known as cellulolysis where the cellulose is breakdown into cellodextrins i.e., smaller polysaccharides. Cellulase is also produced by snails, earthworms, and termites. Cellulase is widely used for processing coffee and in food, paper & pulp, textile, pharmaceutical, and other industries. It is used as an ingredient in washing and cleaning agents, laundry detergents, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, etc.

Increasing demand for cellulase in various industries such as animal feed, agriculture, pharmaceutical, paper &pulp, cosmetics, and other industries has a positive impact on the global cellulase market. Increasing demand for cellulase in paper & pulp industry enhances the paper quality and requires less energy while refining. Cellulase has ability to decrease viscosity of pulp which increases the drainage efficiency of waste. Growing demand for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and increasing production and consumption of biofuels are factors augmenting demand for cellulase. Cellulase is used in production of beverages in order to improve the yield and quality of products.

High processing cost of cellulase and huge requirement of cellulase in biomass saccharification that limits the commercialization of biomass bio-refineries are factors challenging growth of the global cellulase market. Increasing R&D for development of better and cost effective cellulase is a factor creating new opportunity for manufacturers operating in the global cellulase market.

The global cellulase market is segmented on the basis of types such as endoglucanase EG, exoglucanase CBH, and β-glucosidase BG. BG is ubiquitous and usually found in fungi, bacteria, animals, and plants. BG enzymes are widely used in various industries such as textile, detergents, cosmetic, animal feed, food, tobacco, and others.

The market is segmented on the basis of application such as animal feed, textile industry, food & beverages, and biofuels. Cellulase is widely used for various textile applications used such as improving fabric quality, bio-polishing of fibers, removal of dye, etc. The acidic cellulase reduces tendency for pill formation, offers smooth surface, and improves water absorption property of fiber. Cellulase is used in animal feed industry for silage production, to enhance digestibility of grasses, and improve nutritional value.

The market is segmented on the basis of geography such as North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. Increasing demand and production of biofuel in the US and presence of major players are factors augmenting demand for cellulase in the North America region. Growing food & beverage, textile, and other industries in countries such as China, India, and others, and increasing investments in various sectors has a positive impact on the cellulase market in the Asia Pacific region.

The worldwide market for cellulase is expected to register moderate CAGR of around 7.5% over the next ten years and was valued at 1,547 Mn in 2018.

Some of the prominent players operating in the target market include Novozymes, Genencor (DuPont), DSM, AB Enzymes, Amano Enzyme, Primalco Ltd, BIO-CAT, Zhongrong Technology Corporation Ltd., Shandong Longda Bio-Products Co., Ltd., Sunson Industry Group, Sinobios, and Codexis.
